TRAINING

Shotokan karate is designed to be beneficial to everyone, regardless of their personal goals. Whether you want to keep fit, learn to defend yourself, or represent your country at competition level, Shotokan karate has something for you. Shotokan karate places emphasis on the ability to defend oneself, especially in situations where the only weapons available are your hands.

Classes are held at our Dojo in Hastings, Christ Church as outlined in our schedule listed below. On Mondays we host the Barbados Karate Association Black Belt class.

Children and adults are welcome from age 6 and up. Beginners need not fear feeling out of their depth as we separate students according to their skill level, and provide individual attention where needed.

EXAMINATIONS

Grading is held three (3) times a year by the Barbados Karate Association and students are promoted as long as they meet the criteria set. Belt levels are as follows:

  • 9th kyu - White
  • 8th Kyu - Yellow
  • 7th Kyu - Orange
  • 6th Kyu - Green
  • 5th Kyu - Blue
  • 4th Kyu - Purple
  • 3rd Kyu - Brown
  • 2nd Kyu - Brown
  • 1st Kyu - Brown
  • 1st Dan - Black

After the first Black Belt level is achieved, there are specified wait periods and other criteria which must be met to be promoted to higher levels. There are ten (10) Dan levels (black belt) in total.

There are also separate courses and examinations for persons desirous of becoming an Instructor, Examiner or Judge in Shotokan karate.
